An investigation had initially indicated that the plane had experienced a mechanical problem.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has said that it will not hand over the Black Box, that holds flight data, to the United States of America and Boeing, the manufacturer of the plane.

According to Iran's Civil Aviation Organisation (CAOI) chief Ali Abedzadeh, no distress calls were made by the pilot of the ill-fated plane.

"The plane, which was initially headed west to leave the airport zone, turned right following a problem and was headed back to the airport at the moment of the crash, " Ali Abedzadeh said.

According to a report by the Washington Post the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder were recovered but were damaged.

Those on board were mostly Iranian nationals but there were also Europeans including 60 Canadians.

No indication has been given that the missile attacks on the US-operated Al Asad air base had anything to do with the deadly crash.

The voice of America reported that the plane caught fire before crashing.
