An 88-year-old man has been released on a bond of Sh500,000 by a Kenyan High Court after he allegedly shot his Simon Macharia, his son, to death with arrows during an argument on 13th October 2019.
The suspect, Francis Mwangi Karebe is said to have committed the heinous act at their residence in Mathira East sub-county at their village Peter Ciira in Nyeri.
Justice Abigail Mshilla made the ruling after the family expressed interest and willingness to accommodate him and pay for the bail.
“They are willing to accept him back, his absence is causing them sleepless nights,” a pre-bail report presented in court read.
The suspect's lawyer Ms. Faith Nzivulu argued during the bail hearing that her client and the late son were not in good terms and had engaged in altercation several times.
“The victim had separated with his wife and it was not the first time they had an altercation but it was never suspected it would take the ugly turn. The accused lost his wife five months ago,” she stated as quoted by Nation.
The lawyer went ahead to point out that the suspect was viewed by his neighbors as not only a lover of peace but also a mediator.
“Mr Karebe is aged and ailing, he has blood pressure and is currently on medication. He is not a flight risk,” she added.
The prosecution did not, however, oppose the bail application. Justice Mshila accepted the bail application and directed the suspect not to interfere with the case.
“The accused is hereby advised to observe timeliness on both hearing and mention dates of the case. He should not interfere with witnesses and must be of good conduct during the bond period. On breach of the terms the bond will be canceled,” Justice Mshila ruled.
