US military on Monday said three Al-Shabaab commanders were killed at Bangeeni, Southern Somalia, a region almost controlled by militants.

The militants, AFRICOM said in a statement, had confronted Somalia's Danab forces before the airstrike disoriented them.

“This airstrike targeted al-Shabaab fighters who posed a direct, immediate, and significant threat to our partner forces,” said Maj. Gen. William Gayler, director of operation, U.S. Africa Command.

“Al-Shabaab consists of terrorists and criminals who seek to export hate and violence more broadly. We remain committed to supporting our Somali partners and the security progress together we are building in the region.”

This was the forth airstrike waged by US and allied forces in Somalia since the beginning of the year, killing nine people in the process.

Notably, the strike comes barely a 72 hours after Kenya Defense Forces troops managed to repulse an Al-Shabaab attack at Pandanguo village in Lamu.

Kenya has recorded at least 11 attacks in the last one month, with the most daring coming a fortnight ago at US Naval Base in Lamu.
