The group from Tanzania was arrested after police caught wind of information that they have been swindling people.

Makueni Police Commander Joseph Ole Naipeiyan confirmed the arrests, adding that during the raid, one of the said beggars got up and ran when police attempted to arrest him.

“When we went to arrest these people, one of them stood and took off on a motorcycle,” he said.

Naipeiyan divulged that the group was arrested through a multi-agency operation, after it was established that unknown people have been stationing them within the town early in the morning to beg.

He said the group admitted being used as part of an ongoing trade which involves importing them from their country to come beg in Kenya, hence the deportation.

"Through a multi-agency approach, we conducted a raid at Wote town where we arrested six Tanzanian nationals who have been begging. They had been brought by unknown persons,” he said.

The six are five women and one man, with the development coming amid media reports that most of the disabled persons in Kenyan streets are from the neighbouring nation.
