Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has lauded the release of Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa on cash bail.

A Mombasa court on Thursday released Jumwa and her co-accused on a bond of Sh1 million or an alternative cash bail of Sh500,000.

Murkomen welcomed the release of the vocal legislator, terming the ruling by Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet as 'well reasoned'.

In a tweet, the Elgeyo Marakwet Senator further sent his condolences to the family of Ngumbao Jola who was shot dead when Jumwa reportedly stormed the home of Ganda Ward ODM candidate Reuben Mwamure Katana on Tuesday night.

"Our colleague Hon Jumwa has been released on cash bail by Hon. Vincent Adet in a well reasoned ruling that safeguards fundamental rights and freedoms of Kenyans. My condolences to the family of the late Ngumbao Jola and I believe justice will be done to all parties involved," Murkomen posted.

In his ruling, Magistrate Adet said it was unlawful for police to hold Jumwa in custody without evidence.

"It is unlawful for the police to hold a person without a formal charge made in court. Persons right to liberty should be respected. Prima-facie evidence is needed," he ruled.

The MP and her bodyguard were directed to present themselves to the Malindi DCIO on October 22.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had requested the court to allow detention of the two for 21 days.
