Six households from Ikinu in Githunguri sub-county have been removed from the list of orphans and vulnerable children fund.
This is after area residents revealed to the children officers that the households are already enrolled for the cash transfer programme for the elderly.
In an exclusive interview, Githunguri sub-county children’s officer Wamaitha Kyule said the funds are meant for the vulnerable in the society. She said the revelations came as people wanted many of such groups to benefit from the aid.
Kyule said residents have discovered their oversight duty towards the funds to ensure that those shortlisted and certified are indeed vulnerable and deserve help. She said once the households entitled to these funds receive it, they bother the residents less in their day-to-day lives as they can support themselves.
The officer said the nominated households’ names are read out in barazas to reduce the chances of lying and exploitation. The amended list has 546 households after the six were rejected. The list will, however, have to go through the final stage of validation before the beneficiaries start receiving the funds.
Kyule revealed that 236 households from Githiga are already receiving the funds and it has proven to be of great help to them. She said the next lot of beneficiaries will be from Githunguri, Ikinu and Karatina.
The officer urged those with orphans they can ably care for without the help of the fund to assist in raising the children to give a chance to the very needy.
