Here are a few tips on how to settle an argument with your partner;

1. Stay in the present

This means you discuss what has just happened, not those that had happened years or months ago. Don't bring in past issues to present if you are up to calming them down. Avoid discussing past conflicts.

2. Use respectful language

Respect is so key to an argument. This can be shown when you don't call your partner names, you don't point fingers at them or yell too loud. It is obvious you will be mad, upset and frustrated but you have to give respect its portion.

3. Listen keenly

Listening is so vital to an argument. Matters can't be solved if there is no active listening by both of you. Make sure you pay attention to what your partner has to say. You can nod your head or use sounds like 'mmmhmm' to show you are getting whatever they have to say. Don't talk as they talk. Let them talk as you listen.

4. Consider your partner's view

Don't be too selfish in the argument, don't consider your own side of the story and forget about your partner's view. This isn't unfair and the argument won't easily come to an end. Think deeply about what you are arguing about and try to weigh your side and your partner's then express.

5. Learn what you both want

While you argue, you can learn what both of you want for the argument to get over. You might be arguing about things that don't really matter to the both of you and so the best thing to do is to let go and focus on what both of you really need. Understanding one another's wants can help future arguments.

6. Always use 'I'

Don't generalize things, make it yourself. Express whatever you want to be changed for you by using I if they always keep you late for events then don't say; 'it's not good us being late for events every time'. You can put it this way: 'I don't like this idea of you making us late for events'. Make it you if you want changes to be done because of you
