Local and foreign contractors have already expressed interest in putting up 8, 200 housing units on a 55-acre government land in Mavoko sub-county, Machakos. A total of 60 contractors have bid to undertaken the project that will boost housing in the county upon completion.

 According to Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary (CS) James Macharia the national government is examining the bids before awarding the contract. He also revealed that the government will announce the winners once the examination is complete.

“We shall soon announce winners of Kenya’s first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) housing project, which will help us establish a mass housing production model to be rolled out on a national scale,” he said, as quoted by Daily Nation.

He also said that the national government is working around the clock to deliver 500,000 housing before the end of its term in office. The units, which will comprise of peri-urban and urban centres, will cost an average of Sh.3 million and below.

The government has said that only firm with a good reputation will be awarded the contractors in a bid to ensure better delivery. Once complete, the project will target low income.
