Six thousand trees have been planted along the Machakos-Kitui road in Machakos County in a move to conserve the environment and increase the country’s forest cover.

The event which was attended by officers from the Ministry of Environment, Water and Natural Resources led by David Njakaiti saw over 6,000 trees planted.

Njakaiti urged residents to plant more trees even at their compounds in order to preserve the environment.

He said that the government was committed to preserving our natural resources and increasing the forest cover to atlest 10 percent by end of 2016.

I the same event, Yatta sub-county deputy county commissioner Allan Macharia said that in order to keep our environment clean and safe, Kenyans will have to embrace tree planting in all parts of the country.

He also argued residents to adopt alternative sources of fuel and shun the usage of charcoal in order to prevent de-forestation.

Yatta constituency MP Francis Mwangangi urged residents to keep their livestock off the trees planted during the event.

He added that burning of charcoal was the main cause of deforestation the area.
