Among the people currently being held in police custody over the murder of ditch tycoon Tob Cohen is Peter Karanja, former husband to Gilgil lawmaker Martha Wangari.

Karanja is being held at the Muthaiga Police Station since Friday, after police took him from his home in Gilgil and took him to the capital for questioning and recording of statements.

However, emerging details indicate that Karanja is not just your common man, and though he was once a taxi driver, he has links across the nation, including with top politicians.

It has emerged that he played a major role in the re-election if retired President Mwai Kibaki by campaigning for him inGilgil and the larger Nakuru County in the 2007 elections.

Its here that he met Wangari, then part of the Warembo na Kibaki crew. He also managed to hook up with top Rift Valley politicians, and at the end of the day, Kibaki was reelected.

In 2011, the two lovebirds teamed up in forming the United Democratic Movement (UDM) party, only to break up last year, after which each has been living separately.

The standard has revealed that before joining politics, Karanja was a taxi driver outside the Lake Nakuru Lodge, and used to wear a turban, before leaving the job in 2006.
