The hippos reportedly coming from River Athi are said to have wrecked havoc in the areas.

Joseph Mathina, a resident from Miondoni, noted that the hippos invade farms in the evening and destroy crops.

"The hippos have really troubled us, due to the drought being witnessed they come in big numbers thus making it difficult for us to chase them, who would face a herd of more than seven hippos?" he posed.

On his part, Gregory Mwenze, a local, said the hippos walk long distances away from the river posing a risk to residents and school going kids.

Mwenze alleged that two cows and a goat were killed by the hippos last week.

"We are forced to climb trees if we come face to face with them, they have eaten our grass and farm produces from the shamba. Now, even our livestock are not safe," he said.

Esther Ndulu, a resident of the area urged KWS to take necessary action before the animals invade homes and kill locals.

"KWS should not wait until someone is injured or killed by these animals for them to take action. They should find ways to deal with these animals sooner," she noted.
