A lawyer has moved to court to have mobile service providers blocked from depriving their subscribers of unused data, otherwise known as data expiry.
Adrian Kamotho argues that Kenyans should be allowed to use their data bundles to depletion, and had also sued the providers over high cost of purchasing the bundles.
He says that equally, the providers are also discriminating against people, considering that expensive bundles which can only be afforded by the rich take longer to expiry than the others.
"Data bundles should not have an expiry date until used up‚ as long as the SIM card is active and the consumer keeps recharging,” he is quoted by the Nation.
Mr Kamotho also wants Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom to be ordered to furnish him with their current data tariffs or display them on their websites for easy access.
In the suit filed before the Communications and Multimedia Appeals Tribunals, he says that its paining when one loses their data when their mobiles run out of power.
He also wants customers to be allowed to roll over unused data.
He claims that his attempts to reach out to the Communications Authority to intervene on the matter have been futile, as CA has not responded to his letters.
According to him, its the role of the authority to protect subscribers from such exploitations.
