Under the chairmanship of Wafula Chebukati, the current IEBC is expected to preside over the 2022 general elections.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV on Saturday, the former Vice President questioned why no changes had been done to the commission since the 2017 election.

"We are entering into the second half very soon of our election cycle and the institution that is supposed to ensure a free and fair election remains as it was, that is a very explosive issue. And we have done nothing about it since the last general election. Why are we preserving it in its present state? For whom are we preserving it in its present state? Is it for Kenyans or for somebody else?" Mudavadi stated.

Four vacancies for commissioners at the IEBC are yet to be filled after the resignations of Dr Roselyn Akombe, Consolata Nkatha, Paul Kurgat, and Margaret Mwachanya.

A substantive Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the commission is also yet to be appointed after Ezra Chiloba was sacked.

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report has recommended a total overhaul of the commission.

This is even as the commission is expected to preside over a possible referendum that may stem from the BBI report.
