The Governor of Garissa County Ali Bunow Korane on Thursday met with the Egyptian Ambassador to Kenya Khaled Samy Al Abyad.
Governor Korane, in a tweet, revealed that he had met the Egyptian diplomat, a meeting which will see Korane's health agenda receive a shot in the arm.
In his tweet, he said that Ambassador Khaled ASamy Al Abyad pledged support for Garissa county's health facilities.
The support from the Egyptian government to the county of Garissa will include the training of doctors, nurses and support staff who will serve in the much-awaited Garissa Cancer Centre.
"Met with Egypt's Ambassador to Kenya H.E Khaled Samy Al Abyad. He pledged his country's support in training of doctors, nurses and support staffs for the upcoming Garissa Cancer Centre, as well as the provision of equipments. Present were FCDC's @simba_guleid & CECM @anadhir, " Governor Korane's tweet read.
Garissa County Government has invested about Sh200 million in the Cancer Centre, a flagship project.
“Huge resources are used to treat cancer. We are optimistic that when we have our own treatment centre in place that we be doing regular screening. We will know the exact number of cancer patients through early detection and subsequently put them on medication,” Ali Bunow Korane said as quoted by the Star when the project was announced to the public in August.
Throat cancer is a big problem in Garissa county hence the need for a cancer centre.
