Coughing is a reflex action made to clear irritants, improper swallowing or mucus from the throat and lungs.
A dry cough is a cough where no phlegm or mucus is produced. This cough is quite irritating and it is usually associated with a tickling sensation in the throat.
Dry cough can be persistent and thus it is advisable to seek medical attention when you experience difficulty in breathing, wheezing and trouble when swallowing any food or drink.
A dry cough can be as a result of;
1. Upper respiratory tract infections
Upper respiratory infections caused by viruses such as flu and common colds lead to dry coughs and irritation of the airways. The coughing starts with a productive cough but turns dry as a person nears recovery. Taking warm liquids can help soothe your throat.
2. Environmental conditions
There are a variety of things in the air that affect the airways. Exposure to different environmental conditions can lead to dry cough. Some of these include cigarette smoking, prolonged exposure to pollution, allergens such as pollen, dust and other irritating chemicals such as nitric oxide and sulfur oxide.
3. Asthma
Coughing is one of the most common symptoms of asthma. This condition leads to the inflammation and narrowing of the airways in the lungs. Most asthma coughs are non-productive meaning there is no phlegm or mucus produced.
