Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos has lashed out at the Senate for falling back in its initial attempts to push for more allocations for the devolved units.
The senate had initially sided with the governors in pushing for Sh335 billion for the counties against the National Assembly which wants them to given Sh316 billion.
Speaking in Iten on Thursday, he termed the Senate's move a blow to the counties, observing that the little allocation will make it hard to operate the counties.
“It is very unfortunate that the senate has decided to approve the proposed allocation by the National Assembly. Counties operating on a shoe-string budget like Elgeyo Marakwet will suffer most,” he told the press.
This came only hours after the senators accepted the allocation, which the governor says caught them off guard, and which now calls for a return to the drawing board.
He said that consultations have since kicked off between the county bosses to plan their next move.
“We are still consulting as members of the council of governors and our chairperson to see the way forward because definitely this is something that has caught us off guard,” he added.
The governors have since warned that operations might halt in the devolved units should the stalemate not be resolved.
