A police report indicates that the attackers arrived at the police post at around 8pm.

According to Habaswen OCS David Tanui, the attackers took advantage of the heavy rains being witnessed in the area to launch their attack.

“The unknown number of attackers were shouting in Somali words…It was dark and the officers dispersed in different directions from the camp and exchange of fire ensued,” said Tanui as quoted by K24 Digital

The attackers are said to have been armed heavily and carried rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) among other artillery.

According to a local administrator who sought anonymity, the attackers launched the attack after two of their members were arrested and locked up at the station.

The exchange of fire between the Kenyan forces and the attackers lasted for about 20 minutes. The two Al-Shabaab suspects who were in police custody were killed during the shootout.

"We suspect the attackers killed the suspect in custody to conceal some information about Al-Shabaab," said a police source as quoted by Daily Nation.

The Dadajabula Police Post is approximately 13 kilometres from the Kenya-Somalia border.
