A student who was recently captured in a viral video being beaten by police officers has opened up about his ordeal in the hands of law enforcers.
Master Allan Omondi, 22, told the Saturday Nation events that happened before his nightmare with police officers.
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology was headed to class before learning about a strike that had been initiated.
Afterwards, he returned to the hostel before heading to the gate where his colleagues had assembled.
But when chaos broke out, he said, he bumped into police officers who labelled him a Mungiki, an outlawed sect that caused mayhem in Mt Kenya for many years.
“They never asked anything. I heard them say: “Huyu ni Mungiki student. Ukicheza na sisi tutakuua na tukutupe kwa kichaka’ (This is a Mungiki student. You joke with us and we will kill you and dump your body in the bush”).
He believes they referred to him as Mungiki due to his dreadlocks. The proscribed group always identified itself with dreadlocks.
“My bleeding did not seem to bother them. The four officers would later signal to their colleagues, who arrived in a vehicle immediately. I was bundled [into the vehicle] and driven towards Juja Police Station,” he said.
Following public outcry, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai ordered probe into the case, with three of the officers involved temporarily suspended.
Another officer who participated in the beating is yet to be identified. Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i warned police officers against lawlessness.
