Railways MCA Pastor David Arao has reiterated that the county government does not offer bursaries for primary school pupils.
This is after Hivisasa reached out to the representative over the high cost of education in Obuga slums. A story covered by Hivisasa highlighted that parents were facing various challenges in a bid to educate children in the slums.
In an interview with Hivisasa, Arao noted that primary school education should be free as per government provisions.
Arao called on parents to ensure that they are ready for the upcoming bursary application slated for January 2020. He noted that parents should collect the application forms at the end of the month.
“The forms will be out within this month. The forms will be available at the MCAs office and the ward administrator’s office. Parents and guardians should be checking and apply in good time,” said Arao who doubles up as the chairman of Kisumu County assembly’s education committee.
The bursaries are normally given out at the ward level, with beneficiaries getting at least Sh5, 000 per successful application.
Early this week, a section of parents in Obunga had narrated how costly it was to keep their children in various primary schools around. They cited transport and lunch as issues that increase the cost of education.
The MCA, however, stated that their bursaries do not cover primary school children.
“We only reach out to secondary school students and those in the Early Childhood Development Centre’s (ECDE). We give books and food to those in ECDE,” said the first-term MCA in an interview with Hivisasa on Friday.
