Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has claimed that more than fifty percent of the Mt Kenya region is in support of Deputy President (DP) William Ruto and his 2022 presidential ambitions.
The DP has been trying to raid the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led region as he seeks to scoop majority of the vote, well aware that it would make his bid easier to achieve.
Speaking on Saturday, the senator who hails from Kiambu County, claimed that as things stand now, the DP enjoys about 80 percent backing in the region, making him the man to beat.
“It is not a question of speculation. Ruto is the man to beat, he is enjoying over 80 per cent support in Mt Kenya,” he told the Standard.
However, he said this doesn't mean that the DP has snatched the region from Uhuru, noting that Uhuru remains the de facto kingpin while the votes are with Ruto.
He said that members of the Kikuyu community still respect Uhuru as their leader, but are more on the side of Ruto with regards to the 2022 presidential race.
“It is not true that Uhuru is falling out of favour, people still respect him as the de facto leader of Mt Kenya,” he opined.
