KQ has been hiring pilots on a contract for the Boeing 737, a move which has not augured well with the Kalpa.

The pilots are set to meet on Wednesday to deliberate on the way forward after the expiry of the ultimatum.

Kalpa General Secretary Murithi Nyaga had written to the airline warning it against the hiring of 20 pilots on contract.

According to Nyaga, the move is not only against the wishes of the pilots but also illegal.

The complainant came after KQ outgoing CEO Sebastian Mikosz announced the airlines plan to hire pilots on contract.

Mikosz accused Kalpa of sabotaging its plans to ensure better service delivery to the clients of the airline.

In a letter addressed to Kenya Airways Chief Human Resources Officer Evelyn Munyoki, Kalpa wanted the process of hiring pilots on contract stopped with immediate effect.

“We hereby demand an immediate freeze on the hiring of the said contract pilots. In addition, we expect an official response of this intent within seven days of this communication, failing which the association will take any action it deems fit,” read part of the letter, as quoted by Daily Nation.
