There was a plan by a section of the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) of Nairobi County to impeach Governor Mike Sonko.
This is according to reports from The Star which further indicate that some of the MCAs had already started collecting signature to remove Sonko from office.
The MCAs reportedly wanted to impeach the governor on the grounds of being incompetent and violating the constitution.
This was after the governor was arrested on December 6 following an order from the Director of Public Prosecution Nordin Haji who directed for the governor to be charged in a Sh357 million graft case.
The impeachment move, however, failed to take off after the intervention of the Minority leader David Mberia who sought advice from opposition leader Raila Odinga on the matter.
“I had sought the direction from our party leader [Raila Odinga] but he promised to get back to me tomorrow (today). So we are waiting for his direction. If he tells us to go ahead, then that will be it,” Mberia stated.
According to The Star, some of the MCAs from Jubilee Party spearheaded by Majority leader Abdi Guyo supported the move to impeach Governor Sonko.
Governor Sonko was released from police custody on Wednesday after the court granted him bail.
