Police in Eldoret have netted a bus carrying 33 different products suspected to have been brought into the country without following due process.
According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Joshtstone Ipara, the bus was nabbed along Eldoret-Uganda road at Maili Nne in the outskirts of Eldoret town on Monday.
“Our officers who were on duty on Monday were able to stop a bus and after through searching, they found out that the bus was carrying 33 products which were smuggled into the country without paying tax,” he said.
Ipara who spoke to the press at Eldoret Central Police Station on Wednesday said the driver managed to escape after deceiving police officers that he was going to bring documents to show the goods were brought in the country legally.
He said since the driver escaped, the owner of the bus will be arrested and taken to court as he is the one who knows where the products were coming from and being taken to.
“Some of the products that were being transported include cables, counterfeit sandals from Puma, shoes, oil among others. We will continue with the investigation until we arrest all those involved,” Ipara noted.
He also put on notice anyone trying to bring goods in the country illegally that they will be arrested and charged.
