The Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport will not be available, although Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Director Gilbert Kibe has not specified the time.

President Uhuru Kenyatta will lead the country in celebrations at the Nyayo Stadium, with Kenya Air Force expected to use the space around the two airports.

Amor Mottley, the Barbados Prime Minister, will be the guest of honour in the celebrations which will mark Kenya's 55th anniversary as Republic.

Fly450, which is one of the operators, issued an advisory on Wednesday citing the JKIA airspace closure advising its clients who had scheduled flights on Thursday.

"Due to Jamhuri Day celebrations, no flights will be allowed to take off or land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport between 11.00 am and 12 pm," read the statement.

"If you are travelling with us on that date, your flight maybe delayed. We are getting in touch with the affected passengers and advising them accordingly."

In another advisory, East African Air said: "Due to Jamhuri Day celebrations, no flights will be allowed to take off or land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport between 9.am and 2 pm."

The closure may however not take long given that the two airports are the busiest in the East and Central Africa region.

It's expected that planes which may be landing during the time are directed to Moi International Airport in Mombasa and Kisumu or Eldoret International Airports.
