On Thursday, the Cabinet chaired by President Uhuru Kenyatta renamed Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day.

In a tweet, Itumbi said the approval will need a node from Parliament, a move which will take place next year since MPs are on recess.

"BBI implementation starts in cabinet by a proposal to rename Boxing day to Utamaduni Day! Parliament will have to approve the proposal. So in 2019, Boxing Day in Kenya will still be boxing day," he said.

Also renamed on Thursday was Moi Day, which will be now called Huduma Day following a cabinet resolution.

"Cabinet also approved renaming of Moi Day, which falls on 10th October, to Huduma Day. This is in line with former President Daniel Arap Moi’s desire that the day be commemorated as a day of service and volunteerism. Renaming of Boxing Day to Utamaduni Day was also approved," State House said.

The recommendations for renaming the two days are part of the Building Bridges Initiative report, which is yet to be implemented.
