Internationally renowned music icon Mariah Carey, who enjoys a huge following on social media, had her Twitter account hacked on new year's eve, Sky News has reported.
According to media reports, the account was used by hackers to post hateful messages, totalling 50 messages.
In the crude tweets, there were references to the songstress's feud with renowned rapper Eminem.
The singer confirmed the breach.
"I take a freaking nap and this happens?" she said.
Twitter is said to have launched an investigation into how the security breach happened.
"As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we locked the compromised account and are currently investigating the situation," Twitter said in a statement to USA Today.
The group that hacked the account called itself 'Chuckling Squad' and appears to be the same group that compromised the account of Twitter chief executive officer Jack Dorsey.
“The phone number associated with the account was compromised due to a security oversight by the mobile provider,” Twitter explained the hacking of its CEO's account as quoted by the Independent. “This allowed an unauthorized person to compose and send tweets via text message from the phone number. That issue is now resolved, " it added.
No indication has been given that the same data breach that caused Dorsey's account to be hacked was also responsible in Mariah Carey's case.
