Veteran politician Koigi Wa Wamwere has accused President Uhuru Kenyatta's government of failing to address the issue of poverty among Kenyans.
The former Subukia MP says that instead of bettering the lives of Kenyans through economical empowerment, the government is making it hard to survive.
He blames this for the increasing number of beggars, which he says is due to Uhuru's inability to create and introduce more avenues through which Kenyans can earn a living.
Wamwere opines that though beggars have always been there, they have increased in Uhuru's tenure, which means that the president is taking the country in reverse.
"Instead of Uhuru taking us forward he is taking us back. Look at the increased number of beggars in our urban centers (Badala ya Uhuru kutupeleka mbele kiuchumi anaturudisha nyuma. Angalia vile ombaomba ni wengi mijini)," he said on Radio Sauti Ya Mwananchi, Saturday evening.
He called upon the president to address the issue of poverty as early as now, failure to which the situation might soon get out of hand and become irreversible.
The former political detainee argues that the government can still correct the situation as otherwise, there will come a time when nothing can be done about it.
"By the time we will be realizing we are moving backwards it might be too late (Wakati tutakuwa tunagundua tunarudi nyuma huenda tutakuwa tunechelewa)," he added.
