A 44-year-old man was on Wednesday arraigned before a Nakuru Court to answer to charges of attempting to escape from lawful custody.
Harun Ndirangu who is serving two life sentences for violent robberies was accused of allegedly attempting to escape while he was being escorted for his hearing in court.
The court heard that the accused person committed the offence on November 12, 2019, while he was being escorted to court by prison warders.
On the material date, the accused who was reportedly shackled with another suspect broke loose and ran towards county offices as he tried to escape from custody.
Chief Magistrate Josephat Kalo was told that the accused’s attempt to escape forced the prison warders to shoot in the air to stop him.
The accused who denied charges of trying to escape was being taken for a court hearing to answer to charges of robbery with violence.
In the case, Ndirangu is being accused of allegedly robbing Elizabeth Ngendo of Sh569,446, a crime that he committed on August 30, 2017, at Sumkam Supermarket in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru.
The court found Ndirangu guilty of shooting a man with an AK47 rifle and robbing three shops and was sentenced to life in prison.
He was also found guilty of robbing Mbugua Njoroge of Sh32,000, stealing Sh50,000 from an M-PESA agent shop.
On September 2, 2017, while armed with an AK47 rifle and a Somali sword, he robbed Samuel Waweru of Sh20,000.
The accused has appealed against the sentence.
