“We are enriching more uranium before the deal was reached ... Pressure has increased on Iran but we continue to progress," Hassan Rouhani said.

The enrichment of Uranium is in contravention of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) which placed commitments on the Iranians to abandon enrichment above 3.67%.

Media reports indicate that the Uranium enrichment is currently at 4.5%.

The admission by the Iranian president comes just days after Iran announced that it was abandoning all its commitments to the nuclear deal struck with major world powers.

The Trump administration unilaterally pulled out of the deal, saying that it did not go far enough in preventing Iran's destabilising activities in the Middle East region.

Josep Borrell, the European Union's top diplomat, held talks with the Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif.

"In a frank dialogue, they discussed the latest developments around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action," the European Union said in a statement.

Hassan Rouhani warned EU troops in the Middle East region that they faced danger after a dispute resolution mechanism in the JCPOA was triggered.
