Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops with the help of Somalia National Army (SNA) on Tuesday night repulsed an Al-Shabaab attack.
According to Somalia's Radio Garowe, the suspected militants unleashed Rocket-Propelled-Grenades on the Kulbiyow army base.
After intensive fighting, the KDF soldiers were able to flush out the militants from the Kulbiyow base, which is found at Lower Jubba.
No casualties were reported during the Tuesday night foiled attack which would have been one of the worst in the history of Kenya.
Incidentally, the victory against the militants at the army base came barely 72 hours after Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe visited the troops in Somalia.
“Even when you are here, we want you to know that we are thinking of you, we can never forget you. We wish you well and success in the execution of your mandate in Somalia,” Gen Mwathethe said.
In 2017, there was a similar attack on the same base in which at least 70 soldiers died.
However, authorities in Nairobi denounced the run over, insisting that only nine soldiers died during the attack.
“At no point was our camp overrun. The KDF remained in control of that camp… it was not breached in any way,” Manoah Esipisu had said then.
Kenyan and allied officials have praised the KDF troops at Kulbiyow for their heroism.
Britain’s then Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and now PM cited the “decisive response” of KDF troops saying they “displayed exemplary levels of bravery in responding to the attack.”
