Paul Makonda was on Friday designated by State Department over his crackdown against members of gay and lesbian communities.

State Department accused Makonda of violating human rights, adding that he remains banned together with his wife Mary Felix.

"These actions against Paul Christian Makonda underscore our concern with human rights violations and abuses in Tanzania," the statement, quoted by Nation, read.

"The Department of State is publicly designating Paul Christian Makonda... due to his involvement in gross violations of human rights, which include the flagrant denial of the right to life, liberty, or the security of persons," the statement added.

President John Magufuli has however distanced his government from the actions, arguing that Makonda was acting on his own.

Magufuli has been recently accused of violating human rights, with opposition leaders accusing him of using police to antagonise opponents.

Human Rights Watch recently also accused Tanzania of violating rights of journalists, warning that such actions could warrant unrest.

Makonda is a senior member of Chama Cha Mapinduzi, which is fighting to remain in power in coming months.
