The member of parliament for Kibra died on Friday at Nairobi Hospital after a long battle with Colorectal Cancer. The legislator had been rushed to hospital on Thursday while in critical condition and was put on life support machine.
Colorectal cancer otherwise known as bowel cancer or colon cancer is among the leading deadly types of cancer.
The disease has a survival rate of 64%. A research conducted in Kenya between 2005 and 2010 on 233 patients also indicated that the recurrence and mortality rates stood at 37.5% and 29.4% respectively.
Colorectal Cancer begins at the colon or rectum parts of the body. It then spreads to the immediate outside tissues of the colon.
Like most types of cancers, with time it spreads to other organs of the body including the lungs.
Some of the most common signs and symptoms of Colorectal Cancer include; diarrhea, weight loss, constipation, blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, fatigue among others.
According to a report by Cancer.Net, this type of cancer has four stages which are classified depending with the location of cancer or the extent to which the disease has spread.
In most cases, surgeries are done to prevent the spread of cancer.
Kibra MP Ken Okoth had been a strong survivor of cancer. He returned to the country two weeks ago after receiving treatment in Paris, France.
