Rarieda Member of Parliament Otiende Amollo has taken issue with the United States of America (USA) over how the government has been dealing with drug cases involving Kenyans.
The US, which has since declared war on drugs, has been seen to make attempts to intervene in a bid to clear the world of drug barons, a move which has had a direct impact on Kenya.
For instance, the country managed to extradite the Akasha brothers; Ibrahim and Baktash, over their operations at the Coast, with Baktash being jailed for 25 years in New York.
Amollo has taken issue with the US for treating Kenya like a lesser nation, criticising the US government for completely taking charge of such matters.
Speaking on Tuesday, Amollo argued that Kenya is a sovereign nation which can handle its own matters, adding that the US should respect that by only offering the needed help and not taking over.
"What is not right is the condescending attitude to say “we will look for you, we will airlift you” as though we do not have a country. Kenya is a sovereign republic, if you want to help us as a country help the DCI," he said.
At the same time, the lawyer who spoke on NTV on Tuesday morning noted that the drug abuse issue remains a serious menace which needs to be dealt with.
He stressed on the need for all persons engaging in the illegal business to be arrested and dealt with as per the Constitution, and those found to need help to be considered for the same.
"The drug problem is real, especially in the coastal region; we cannot wish that away. It is important that drug traffickers and users are arrested, prosecuted, and jailed. Those who need treatment should also be properly rehabilitated," he added.
