As the world marks Persons Living With Disability (PLWDs) day on December 2, 2019, a section of PLWDs in Nakuru have faulted the county government  for denying them the 5% job slots as stipulated in the law.

Led by Nakuru Town East sub county PLWDs chair George Otieno, the group said there is need for the county to recognise their presence, and give them jobs to cater for their families.

“We mark this day but we are not a happy lot since the county seems to neglect us despite the fund being in place,” Otieno said.

The group decried tender awards in Nakuru County, stating that despite having the relevant documents, their applications are never considered.

“We have not been benefiting from the tenders since 2015,” one of the members said.

Their plea comes six months after Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui vowed to ensure PLWDs are well taken care of.

“As a county, we shall engage the regional commissioner and county commissioner so that public buildings comply. Those that will not comply will be given 6 months to do so,” he said six months ago in reference to providing ramps and lifts for persons with disabilities.

The theme for this year's celebration is promoting participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda.

This year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) focuses on the empowerment of persons with disabilities for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as anticipated in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development pledges to ‘leave no one behind’ and recognises disability as a cross-cutting issue, to be considered in the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
