Siaya Senator James Orengo has said that the calls for a referendum on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) are unstoppable.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview with NTV, Orengo said that it is important for the people of Kenya to be involved in decision making.
He argued that parliament is not an ideal organ to dictate the needs of millions of Kenyans who can speak on their behalf.
"You must involve the people of Kenya because the constitution states that the people of Kenya are sovereign, therefore, should be included in making such decisions," he said.
The senator implored that the referendum will give all Kenyans an opportunity to air their views in order to end up with a popular idea.
He went on to call upon the allies of the Deputy President William Ruto to change their tune so that they can back a referendum.
"Going to the people is the safest way instead of having politicians sit at a table," he said.
On the issue of the Prime Minister, Orengo said that the position will only work if some of the powers allocated to the President are shifted to the new office.
"When you create the office of a Prime minister, you re-allocate some of the powers of the president," he argued.
