Speaking during his campaigns in Kibra on Friday, Mariga said that the President served him with a cup of water before giving him the cap.

He also said that the head of state advised him to reach out to the Kikuyu community from the constituency.

He noted that the President assured him that the community would not abandon him after he entered the contest for the seat. He also said that he is confident that he will get the votes required to become the next MP following the demise of Ken Okoth.

“I want to talk about this cap. Do you know who gave me the cap? We were there with other leaders and the President told me Mariga come let talk for a short time. I sat down and he served me with a cup of drinking water. He told me when I arrive in Kibra the first thing I was to do was to call his tribesmen. He told me to organise a meeting with them because they will not let me down,” he said.

"Naongelea kofia kidogo. Si mnajua nani alinipa hii kofia? Sasa tulikuwa hapo tulikuwa na waheshimiwa wengi lakini mzee wetu President akaniambia Mariga kuja tuongee kidogo akaniambia keti tuongee. Nikakaa chini akaleta maji hapo tukunywe. Akaniambia ukifika Kibra Kitu ya kwanza uite jamii yetu. Ukae nao chini kwa sababu wajua hao watu hawawezi kuangusha."

Mariga is set to lock horns with ODM Imran Okoth and ANC candidate Eliud Awalo among others.
