This comes only a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta, who founded the initiative alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga vowed to stick with it to the end.

Waiguru says that the intention behind Uhuru's entrance into the truce with Raila was to ensure that peace prevails after elections, which has not been the case in Kenya.

She pointed out that the president is out to end the culture where the nation slips into wrangles during political seasons after every five years.

"President Kenyatta has always been very categorical that the ‘handshake’ was intended to solve the problem of disputed elections that brought conflict and instability in the country every five years,” Waiguru told the Nation on a phone interview.

The county boss who has been pushing the handshake issue in the Mt Kenya region said that in line with the desire for a better Kenya, the BBI will result in a referendum.

She expressed confidence that the initiative will result in constitutional amendments that will bring about a system that will enhance lasting peace and inclusivity.

"The handshake was meant to bring lasting peace and inclusivity in the country... starting with the BBI initiative that will eventually lead to legislative and structural reforms," noted the former Devolution CS.

Waiguru's remarks come as an echo to several earlier claims from Raila and his allies, who were the first ones to claim that the BBI will result in constitutional changes.

Speaking on Wednesday, Uhuru, however, rubbished claims that the push seeks to create a position that will keep him in the political arena upon the lapse of his term in 2022.
