Speaking at the Turkana Culture Festival on Friday in Lodwar, Mr Odinga appeared to call into question the authenticity of the signatures that were collected in support of the initiative.

"But you cannot change the constitution by sitting in an office and writing without involving anybody and then saying you have collected signatures. We even do not know where the signatures were collected from yet you claim you want to reduce our burden (Lakini katiba huwezi tu, unakaa katika ofisi unaandika bila kuuliza mtu yeyote alafu unasema umesanya masahihihi. Pale ambaye sahihi ilichukuliwa hatujui ni wapi alafu unasema unataka kupunguza mizigo yetu), " Mr Odinga said

His words came in the context of rising political temperatures over the Building Bridges Initiative, which he strongly supports, and Dr Ekuru Aukot's proposals.

The fate of the Punguza Mizigo Initiative lies with the 47 counties across the county which will debate it and decide whether to pass it or reject it.

If passed, the bill will significantly reduce the number of constituencies, abolish the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and target resources at the grassroots levels.

Raila has called on Kenyans to ignore the Aukot bill and wait for the recommendations of the BBI committee that is in the process of compiling its report after collecting views from Kenyans.
