US president Donald Trump unloaded Wednesday on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederikssen, giving the spat over Greenland a new twist.
Speaking to members of the press at the White House, Donald Trump described the PM's comments as nasty after she branded the US president's offer to buy Greenland as absurd.
The 76-year-old was angered by the use of the adjective absurd, saying that she should have just said no.
"I thought that the prime minister's statement that it was absurd, that it was an absurd idea was nasty," he said.
"I thought it was an inappropriate statement. All she had to do is say no, we wouldn't be interested. She's not talking to me. She's talking to the United States of America. You don't talk to the United States that way, at least under me, " he added.
Trump had asked officials of his government to explore the possibility of buying Greenland, sparking widespread bewilderment.
He later abruptly cancelled his scheduled trip to Denmark next month, citing Frederikssen's lack of interest in discussing a land deal with the US.
The spat has underscored Trump's unconventional way of conducting foreign policy that has sparked a lot of concern in various quarters.
Foreign policy experts have warned that his style is damaging the US's standing in the world.
Trump had reasoned that Greenland would have strategically important.
