On September 29th, a car slid from MV Harambee and plunged into the Indian Ocean at Likoni Channel.

The car occupants' Mariam Kighenda and her daughter Amanda died and their bodies stayed in the water for 13 days before divers retrieved them.

Detectives have launched investigations with the aim of finding out whether the car engine was on or off when the car reversed back and plunged into the ocean.

According to preliminary findings, the car engine was off but its windshield wipers were on.

Officers from Scene of Crime Unit also revealed that the car's gear was found on its parking mode.

“We suspect the wipers were switched on when the woman panicked because the ignition key was locked, and the gear is in the parking mode. We cannot tell the state of the brakes at the time of the accident,” a detective involved in the investigation told Nation.

Another puzzle to be established is how the door could not open on its own after the car was retrived from the ocean, detectives had to break it before they gained entry.

“This also showed that the vehicle had been switched off since the door could not open. We are only left with assessing the engine,” another detective said.

The deceased will be buried in Makueni County.
