Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha has denoted that 21 cases of exam irregularities have been recorded in the 2019 KCSE. Speaking at Kenya High School, the CS said that KNEC was able to confiscate 90 mobile phones that were being possessed by students.

“The phones were to aid in cheating,” the CS said.

The CS was accompanied by Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, Mercy Karogo who is the Kenya National examinations Council (Knec) acting Chief Executive Officer and Nancy Macharia who is the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO.

He said that more than 300 schools were put under the watch after reports of planned cheating. He mentioned that counties like Nairobi, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Wajir and Garissa as some of the counties that engaged in exam irregularities.

Magoha added that two police officers who were given Sh 2000 to aid exam cheating will have to face the law after their names are handed over to the Interior Ministry.

“Most of those cases were administrative, with offences such as lateness," he said. He confirmed that 699,745 candidates were able to sit for the exam this year.

The candidates began their examination with practicals on 21 October while the written tests on 4th November, he added that examiners will start marking the papers from 28th November.
