Uhuru is the force behind the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), alongside ODM leader Raila Odinga, a push that seeks to bring about constitutional amendments.

Speaking on Saturday, Okango observed that the president could indeed be meaning well for the country, though his efforts risk being watered down by self-centered politicians.

"I believe the president is trying to unite Kenyans but there are politicians playing 2022 politics with this issue, hence the division. (Naamini rais anajaribu kuunganisha wakenya lakini kuna wanasiasa wanacheza siasa za 2022 na ndio kuna mgawanyiko)," he said on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show on Saturday morning.

He claimed some forces close to the president are also using the push to shut others down, especially those who are deemed opposed to the BBI, with an eye on 2022 polls.

He cited the Kakamega incident, where a section of politicians were allowed to hold the BBI consultative forum, while the other section was blocked from holding a rally in Mumias.

"When you see others being shut down then its politics, this is the battle for 2022. (Ukiona wengine wanazimwa basi hii ni siasa, hivi ni vita vya 2022)," he added.
