Police in Igembe North have launched a manhunt for three women who wanted to forcefully circumcise an 18-year-old girl from Kautine.
It took the intervention of a neighbour to call the police to save the woman from the cut after she was waylaid by the circumcisers.
The victim was forcefully taken to Laare Police Station on Saturday after the women threatened to make the cut to make her accepted by her family.
“They wrestled me to the ground and stripped me naked. They vowed to circumcise me by force. I was rescued by a neighbour who helped me report the matter to the police. They have threatened to have me circumcised should I return home,” she said.
Meru County Maendeleo ya Wanawake Treasurer and anti-FGM crusader Jeniffer Kathure has appealed to the police to ensure the culprits are brought to book as soon as possible.
The incident comes amid a crackdown on elders and parents taking their children through the vice.
The region remains one of those where FGM is still prevalent.
