Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga on Monday paid tribute to his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
In a tweet on Monday, Mr Odinga described Jaramogi, Kenya's first Vice President as a patriot and a selfless leader.
According to him, Jaramogi played an important role in building Kenya given the many sacrifices he made during the struggle.
"26 years ago you took a journey from our beloved country never to return. Your patriotic and selfless actions remain engraved in the hearts of those who knew you and in the collective memory of the nation you helped build," said Raila.
"Your memory remains a permanent presence in your absence," added the former Prime Minister, who is one of the most influential children of Jaramogi.
After serving for two years in government, Jaramogi unceremoniously resigned after Jomo Kenyatta neutralised his position as Vice President.
Thereafter, he formed the Kenya People's Union, which would later lead to his house arrest and subsequent detention.
Jaramogi returned to active politics in the 1980s and would encourage young politicians in revolt against retired President Daniel Moi.
After the country obtained pluralism in 1992, Jaramogi was elected Bondo MP and official opposition leader on Ford Kenya. He died in 1994.
