Acting Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani has defended his decision to cut down on foreign trips as a measure aimed at preventing wastage of the limited resources.
Speaking on Wednesday, the CS said that the decision was very necessary, upon his realization that the government was sending too many representatives on foreign trips.
He said that as a result of the over-representation in delegations, the country was wasting funds which can be more beneficial if channelled towards other utilities.
Ukur further said that he will not allow the country to use huge amounts sending out big delegations, funds that can be used to better water connectivity and other government services.
"The days when Kenya sent delegations of whatever numbers; 60, 70 or even more is a thing of the past. Can't this (money) be converted into service to make sure that roads and functional," he said in an interview with Citizen TV.
Yattani also noted that he realized that the government was living beyond its means, hence his decision to reverse that.
"We've realized that it's in our interest as a country to love within our means," he added.
In the September 2019 announcement, the CS declared a halt to benchmarking trips for all public officers, adding that Cabinet Secretaries must secure president Uhuru Kenyatta's greenlight before embarking on foreign trips.
