A majority of Senators on Tuesday afternoon were opposed to the approval of the revised debt ceiling for the National Government.
Most of the senators stood to oppose the motion claiming that the acting Treasury Cabinet secretary Ukur Yatani does not have the convincing language nor the projects in line to be funded by the borrowed loans.
"I oppose this motion not to go against my party but to stand with the people of Kericho, the people of Kenya at large, no project has been allocated any fund by the report of the acting Cabinet Secretary of Treasury Ukur Yatani," said Senator Aron Cheruiyot during a session aired live through the Public Broadcasting Unit (PBU)
The majority leader of the Senate Kipchumba Murkomen is in the record supporting the motion.
Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga opposed the motion, saying it will kill devolution since even with the borrowing, the county allocation is still minimal and the government doesn't promise to raise.
"It's not logical to give the government a legal way to continue borrowing, it's not right for the government of Kenya to go against the East African treaty which allows us to borrow not more than 50 per cent of the country's GDP," said Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula.
Wetangula added that the country can't be borrowing from commercial loan dealers like China whom their interest rates are high and leaving out those with lower interest rates as Germany.
He also opposed the high costing of the projects being launched by the government and encouraged it to choose wisely who to befriend with loans.
Narok senator Ledama Olekina with a heavy heart supported the debt raising ceiling saying the country doesn't have other options as the economy of the country is on its knees and with the borrowing can be salvaged.
He encouraged the government to come up with policies to help in payment of the debts and proper use of the borrowed amount.
The National Assembly in October voted to increase Kenya's debt ceiling to a whopping Sh9 trillion.
