Kisumu-based Grassroots Trust Organisation in collaboration with other community-based organisations on Thursday launched the grassroots housing cooperative society geared towards building better affordable houses in slum areas.
According to Grassroots Trust coordinator Lawrence Apiyo, the cooperative currently has 1, 000 members.
He said they intend to solicit for funds to put up better houses in areas such as Obunga, Kaloleni, Bandani, Nyalenda A and Nyalenda B.
Speaking during the launch of the cooperative at the Jomo Kenyatta sports ground, Apiyo challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to be part of the cooperative by donating Sh5 million and Sh2 million respectively.
“We are asking President Uhuru Kenyatta, give us even Sh5 million in this fund that we have launched. Only Sh5 million I know you can give that. I am asking the governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o. We need only Sh2 million from you."
"That is Sh7 million, you are going to see how accelerated work we are going to do in terms of providing adequate housing in this County,” said Apiyo.
The coordinator said they intend to build three houses for people living with disability next month, before putting up ten housing units in 2020.
On her part, Beatrice Achieng, a resident of Obunga who is a member of the Sacco said their dream is to pull resources together in order to improve their housing.
The national government’s fourth agenda is better housing for all, which goes hand in hand with the County government of Kisumu’s sixth agenda.
