A civilian identified as Julius Mwenda fell a victim of a police bullet after a cop named Murithi attached to Kunati police station shot him before shooting himself.
Going by the reports of his brother James Magorwe, their squabble began at a bar located in Meru when Mwenda was bought a beer by a friend but the bar attendant refused to serve the drink.
A disagreement rented the air between Mwenda and the bar attendant attracting the attention of the cop who was allegedly his friend.
"The officer and Mwenda started fighting and he was overpowered. He got annoyed and called for reinforcement. His colleagues arrived and handcuffed Mwenda," Magorwe narrated.
He said that the policemen beat Mwenda who was nursing injuries from the previous fight.
At the station, he was ordered to record a statement before the issuance of a P3 form which he could take to a hospital. Magorwe clarified that the cop had no gun during the squabble but got it from the police station and used it to kill Mwenda.
"He got the gun at the police station and killed him. We found his body at Meru Level Five Hospital morgue,” he said as quoted.
Another testimony from Joseph M’Ntuikiba, who is a businessman and a former councillor pointed out that Mwenda only wanted the beer but the cop forced the bar attendant to close the bar.
He described the killer cop as a drunkard and a bully who frustrated the locals.
County commander Patrick Lumumba has confirmed the incident and asked the locals and the police to coexist. He refuted the claims that the area police were animalistic towards the locals.
