Form one, two and three students have been sent home after 52 students at the school exhibited symptoms of a strange illness.

“… there has been an increasing number of cases presenting with an unknown cause of high-pitched cough, sneezing and low-grade fever amongst some of the students,” the school said in a press statement on Tuesday.

The school management has isolated the affected students from the rest of the students.

Samples were obtained from the students for tests to be done on them in a bid to identify the disease.

The school has since contacted parents and guardians of the affected students.

The institution, which is a national school informed stakeholders, parents and guardians that they are working with the Health Ministry and the department of Integrated Disease Surveillance Response (IDRS) to be able to identify the disease.

Form Four students will remain in school as they prepare for the national examinations.

The emergence of the incidence is a big blow to the school as it comes at a time when Form Four students are preparing for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

Starehe Girls High School is among the top-performing schools in the country.

This is the first time such a case has been reported at the school.
