Two people on Tuesday escaped death narrowly after their car blasted due to overheating along Kisii-Nyamira highway, near Riamaranga area.
Huge fire consumed the vehicle as the two terrified occupants watched from a distance, with locals trying their best to put off the fire.
The occupants were travelling from Kisii to Nyamira and their identity could not be established at that time because none of them was willing to speak.
Eye witness George Nyambane said the fire started spreading out without the knowledge of occupants and it took efforts of passers by to notify them.
Thereafter, the two parked it along the highway and jumped out for safety. Dozens of locals rushed to the scene to rescue the burning vehicle.
"They were not aware of the huge fire. It took efforts of the residents to notify them about the tragedy. We tried to put it off in vain," he said.
The vehicle was completely destroyed and the owner could not rescue anything important. The entire bonnet was destroyed beyond recognition.
County Commissioner Amos Mariba confirmed the incident and asked motorists to regularly check their vehicles to avoid such calamities.
"It's unfortunate thing to happen. Usually, it's important to have the vehicle checked completely to avoid such kind of scenarios," he noted.
